Australian Cypress Oil Pty Limited (ACO) was founded in December 1995 to process and market essential oils and other products from the tree, Callitris intratropica. That year the Australian Essential Oil Company Pty Ltd conducted the initial study and developed a business plan for developing and selling Blue Cypress Oil.

ACO then entered into a license agreement with the Tiwi Land Council of the Aboriginal Tiwi people of Northern Territory, who own the land on Melville Island on which the majority of the Callitris intratropica plantations grow.

ACO has an extendable 10-year license for extensive plantations of Callitris intratropica on Bathurst Island. ACO has worked closely with the Northern Territory Government to allow it to access the remaining mainland blocks of abandoned Callitris intratropica plantations, and in 1997, ACO was granted a license to harvest the first stand of mainland Callitris intratropica.

In 1998, the N.T. Government also awarded ACO a license for the two remaining commercial stands of Callitris intratropica at Howard Springs and Gunn Point, to the east and north of Darwin. ACO is working with the Northern Territory Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries to develop a strategic resource development plan for the mainland blocks and plantations at Radio Block, Howard Springs and Gunn Point.
